History

Hood County SWAT

The first Hood County Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team was formed in 1997. Since then, the team has undergone many changes in members, equipment, and tactics. In 2009, when Sheriff Deeds took office, the SWAT team was revitalized and now includes members from several agencies. These members all meet the same requirements for training and certification and work together as one cohesive team to perform the duties of SWAT.

American SWAT Teams

The first SWAT team was established in the Los Angeles Police Department in 1968. Since then, many American police departments, especially in major cities and at the federal and state levels of government, have established their own elite units under various names. These units, regardless of their official names, are referred to collectively as SWAT teams in colloquial usage.
