Wolf Hollow Expansion Project

Wolf Hollow is currently constructing a 1,100 megawatt expansion to their existing generation capacity

  • 1 MW can power about 200 Texas homes during peak demand.
  • 1,100 MW has the capability of powering up 220,000 homes during peak load

Prior to full operations, site teams must conduct first-time events including gas line air and steamblow tests. These tests are required to ensure all operating systems are working properly and tooptimize units prior to them going online

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has granted Exelon Generation an Air Permit to begin operational testing at Wolf Hollow Stations of the new GE gas turbines to ensure the emissions complies with all state and federal ambient air quality standards

Testing is currently scheduled to begin on November 30th and could potentially conclude April 2017

Commissioning scheduled for summer 2017


Required Testing

First Fire - "First Fire" means that the gas turbine is started and accelerated to full speed. It also demonstrates that all gas turbine systems, including fuel delivery, ignition, and rotor dynamics, and its software are functioning properly. This process helps to ensure long-term safety of the equipment.

What should we expect to hear or see during the First Fire testing?

  • The initial start-up of the combustion turbine may produce a reddish haze for brief periods of time.

Steam blows - Blowing steam through piping to remove debris from the system also tests the system for possible leaks, another measure to ensure safety

  • Steam blow testing could last as long as five to seven days
  • Silencers will be used to reduce the noise

Gas Line Air Blows - use compressed air to clean the supply gas lines. Compressed air is stored in a tank and released rapidly thru the gas supply pipe(s). The compressed air releases are very short in nature - typically 4-6 seconds. Hearing protection is required of employees during this process and it occurs approximately 30-60 days before first fire of the units. It is important to note we do not use natural gas during this process and that we release ONLY compressed air very quickly.

Community Concerns

The testing of the units will not pose health, or environmental concerns or risks to the community. Exelon complies with all applicable permitting to ensure testing is compliant within state and federal laws.
