Marriage Education Classes
As of September 1, 2008, couples who go through a Texas-approved marriage education class will not have to pay the $60 state portion of their marriage license fee.
Marriage license fees are as follows:
Copies of marriage licenses - $8
With a state-approved marriage education class certificate - $17
Without a state-approved marriage education class certificate - $77
Applicants are required to provide proof of age and identity. Any valid, current, and correct document in English issued by this state, another state, the U.S. government, or a foreign government establishing identity and age is acceptable, with the exception of a consulate card. Examples include:
Valid driver's license
Certified birth certificate
Current employment badge or card
Current military ID
Valid government ID
Applicants must also know their Social Security numbers.
From the date of issuance of a marriage license, the license is good for 90 days and may be used anywhere in Texas. There is a 72-hour waiting period before the marriage license may be used, unless one applicant is on active duty in the armed forces.
